Mathematics teaches us how to make sense of the world around us by developing a child’s ability to calculate, to reason and to solve problems. It enables children to understand and appreciate relationships and pattern in both number and space in their everyday lives. Children learn mathematics best through tasks where they have to make choices in order to solve a problem or a puzzle. It helps them to practise skills, ideally in an enjoyable and engaging way, supporting the development of understanding as well as their confidence and their competence.

All schools in the Ark network follow the Mathematics Mastery programme. (Click herePowerpoint for parents 2018.pptx). At Ark John Archer the programme has been introduced in Reception, Year One and Year Two then moves up through the school year on year. In non-Mathematics Mastery year groups, we are following the White Rose Maths Hub curriculum, which provides teachers with problem solving and reasoning tasks ensuring that these central aims of the curriculum are embedded in daily Maths teaching.

All schools have a minimum of 1hr 20min Maths teaching every day made up of a Maths lesson (around 1 hr) and Maths Meeting (around 20mins). Some schools also have an additional 'Arithmetic Meeting'. Schools are encouraged to link Maths with other areas of the National Curriculum.​

We at Ark John Archer Primary strive to broaden children’s mathematical understanding and experiences from the Foundation Phase to Key Stage 1 & Key Stage 2 classes. To do this, children need to understand key elements such as counting and understanding number, knowing and using number facts, calculating, measuring, understanding shape and space and handling data.


At Ark John Archer Primary our aims in teaching mathematics are that all children will:

  • Enjoy the subject and study it with confidence and a sense of achievement
  • Understand the relevance of the subject in today’s world
  • Reach their potential in mathematics and a range of other mathematical skills;
  • Apply these skills with confidence and understanding when solving problems;
  • Develop thinking skills by communicating mathematical ideas to a partner or group;
  • Receive opportunities to work systematically, creatively and independently.
  • By the end of each Key Stage be at or above the National expected levels in numeracy.



At Ark John Archer Primary, we use a variety of teaching and learning styles in our mathematics lessons. Our principal aim is to develop children’s knowledge, skills and understanding in mathematics. We do this through a daily lesson that has a high proportion of whole-class and group-direct teaching. During these lessons we encourage the pupils to ask as well as answer mathematical questions. We encourage the use of mathematical vocabulary to support the children with their understanding of mathematical concepts.

Children have the opportunity to use a wide range of resources including ICT to support their work and enhance their learning. Wherever possible, we encourage the children to use and apply their learning in everyday situations. In all classes there are children of differing mathematical ability. We recognise this fact and provide suitable learning opportunities for all children by matching the challenge of the task to the ability of the child. We achieve this through a range of strategies.

At all levels learning mathematics is about solving problems using key processes such as:

  • looking for patterns and relationships between numbers
  • making sense of and checking information
  • communicating and presenting maths using words and diagrams, for example, graphs and symbols
  • reasoning and developing mathematical arguments.

Progression in mathematics involves using and applying these processes and skills in mathematics lessons across the whole school curriculum and in everyday life.

As a mathematical problem-solver, children at Ark John Archer Primary  learn and use skills such as:

  • sorting
  • ordering
  • grouping
  • measuring
  • calculating
  • comparing
  • manipulating, organising and interpreting information.
