At Ark John Archer Primary we believe that physical education, experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is a unique and vital contributor to the all-round physical development and well being of our pupils. A broad and balanced physical education curriculum is intended to provide for pupils’ increasing self-confidence in their ability to manage themselves and their bodies within a variety of movement situations. Progressive learning objectives, combined with sympathetic and varied teaching approaches, provide stimulating, enjoyable, satisfying and appropriately challenging learning experience for all pupils. The selection of suitably differentiated and logically developed tasks will help pupils, irrespective of their innate ability, enjoy success and be motivated to further develop their individual potential and take part in lifelong physical activity.
Providing a balanced range of individual, paired and group activities, in addition to co-operative, collaborative and competitive situations aims to cater for the preferences, strengths and needs of every pupil. These activities, experienced within a broad physical education curriculum, aim to promote a broad base of movement knowledge, skills and understanding. They also intend to develop the pupils’ ability to work independently and to respond appropriately and sympathetically to others, irrespective of their age, gender, cultural or ethnic background.
Children learn by being active and physical development takes place across all areas of learning and development. Physical development helps children gain confidence in what they can do, helps them to feel the benefits of being physically healthy and to develop a positive sense of wellbeing. We encourage children to develop confidence and control of the way they move and the way they handle tools and equipment. We give all children the opportunity to undertake activities which offer the appropriate physical challenge, both outdoors and indoors, using a wide range of resources to support specific skills.
KEY STAGE 1
During Key Stage 1 pupils build on their natural enthusiasm for movement, using it to explore and learn about their world. They start to work and play with other pupils in pairs and small groups. By watching, listening and experimenting, they develop their skills in movement and coordination, and enjoy expressing and testing themselves in a variety of situations.
KEY STAGE 2
During Key Stage 2 pupils enjoy being active and using their creativity and imagination in physical activity. They learn new skills, find out how to use them in different ways, and link them to make actions, phrases and sequences of movement. They enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other. They develop an understanding of how to succeed in different activities and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success.
